Splenomegaly with Splenic Vein Thrombosis Causing Gastroesophageal Varices and Bleeding Report of Three Cases

Abstract
This report concerns studies on three cases of splenic vein thrombosis with splenomegaly causing gastrointestinal varices and bleeding. All three patients presented with a history of upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding and mass on left upper quadrant area. Splenectomy was the procedure of choice in this report.
Splenic vein obstruction is an infrequently recognized and infrequently reported -intraabdominal vascular problem. It is usually grouped with portal hypertension, rarely being considered a separate entity. No cases of primary splenic vein -obstruction have been reported; it is always secondary to or a complication of localized upper abdominal disease or a generalized systemic process. Splenic vein thrombosis with splenomegaly is manifest by gastrointestinal bleeding. When "bleeding occurs, splenectomy is the procedure of choice, combined with the appropriate treatment of the primary disease.
Available literatures were reviewed with a discussion regarding the pathogenesis, incidence, clinical symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.
